Local Food: A Series by Rab Cummings

Artist Statement

I have always been a part of the co-op movement. As a small child I scooped peanut butter from five gallon buckets, weighed out lentils on spring scales and poured syrup from barrels. Co-ops have come a long way since those early days and that’s a good thing. One thread has remained however- recognition that good food is tied to land and people.

When I photograph food, I seek to capture small glimpses of the soil and rain, the farmers, the vendors and the cooks that made it possible. Food does not happen in isolation and every element in the chain deserves recognition. My hope is that these images will help you reflect on the food and communities that nourish us.

I was born in Edmonds, Washington and have lived in Montana since 1989. When not photographing food and people, I lead ship-based expeditions for Lindblad / National Geographic.
