Growing Our Local
Food Ecosystem

We’re building a resilient regional food network that supports small producers, reduces barriers to market, and makes it simpler for communities to choose local.

Member guided growth

When neighbors own their grocer,
it serves their neighborhood

For four decades, our co-op has been guided by the people who shop here, not distant shareholders.

  • 1979

    Crossroads

We started as Crossroads Consumer Services Co-op, because people wanted democratic control of their food supply. The store, mostly run by volunteers, was in a small house on S. Wallace Avenue.

  • 1984

    Co-op at West College St

The Co-op legally changed our name to Community Food Co-op and moved to a larger space near Montana State University. By 1990, we had grown to three paid employees and 120 volunteers.

  • 1992

New home at 908 West Main

By 1992, annual sales had reached $1 million and the Co-op outgrew the College Avenue location. It relocated to 908 West Main — a building that would become its long-term home.

  • 2002

    Major Renovation

With the assistance of member-owner loans, the Co-op completed a large renovation of its West Main store in 2002. Retail space doubled, enabling broader product selection and improved shopping experience.

  • 2006

    Launch of Central Kitchen

As deli demand grew, the Co-op opened an off-site kitchen/ bakery/warehouse known as the “Central Kitchen” to supply prepared foods, baked goods, and support expanded deli operations.

  • 2011

    Opening of Co-op Downtown

The Co-op debuted its second retail outlet, Co‑op Downtown, in the heart of Bozeman. This location specializes in prepared foods, with a salad bar, and hot bar.

  • 2019

    West Main Expansion

Supported by member-owner loans and community financing, the Co-op completed a major expansion of its original home, expanding retail space and modernizing operations.
