In celebration of Indigenous Peoples Month, the Community Food Co-op is thrilled to introduce you to Shauna White Bear, a gifted artisan and owner of White Bear Moccasins. Shauna’s craft is deeply personal, rooted in her heritage, and reflects her connection to the land and people of Gallatin Valley.
Shauna’s moccasins aren’t just footwear—they’re a medium for storytelling and a celebration of Indigenous culture. Each piece is carefully crafted by hand, using traditional methods and techniques passed down through generations. "Every stitch connects me to my ancestors and our stories," she says, sharing how her artistry preserves her cultural heritage while bringing it into the present. Shauna’s dedication to her craft is a source of pride, one that she hopes inspires others to connect with and celebrate their own roots.
Beyond her work with White Bear Moccasins, Shauna is a dedicated mentor in the community. She collaborates with students from Montana State University who work with her, sharing her knowledge of traditional crafts and cultural practices. Through this mentorship, she provides a safe and supportive space where students can learn, connect with Indigenous traditions, and gain skills that help them make a meaningful impact in their own communities.
Shauna draws much of her inspiration from the natural beauty surrounding her. The open skies, rugged mountains, and wide rivers of Gallatin Valley offer her a sense of peace and purpose that she brings into her art. "I love living here," Shauna reflects. "There’s a unique connection to nature that I feel here that’s unlike anywhere else."
We’re honored to share Shauna’s story this Indigenous Peoples Month. Her journey is a reminder of the richness that local artisans and cultural heritage bring to our community. At the Co-op, we’re proud to support artisans like Shauna who infuse our community with creativity, tradition, and a deep respect for the land.
As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month, let Shauna’s work inspire us all to honor and cherish the diverse histories, talents, and traditions that shape our shared community. Her dedication reminds us that creativity and culture are living forces that help keep our community connected and vibrant.
