The Story Behind the Muffs
When Charly Blackwood returned to Bozeman during the pandemic, she never imagined that baking English muffins would reconnect her with her hometown in such a meaningful way. What began as a comforting pastime with her partner, Will, soon blossomed into a thriving local business: Furrow & Fly.
Furrow & Fly was born out of resilience, creativity, and a deep love for Bozeman. Over six months, Charly and Will meticulously developed their English muffin recipe, crafting each batch with Montana-grown grains and a commitment to quality. The process wasn’t rushed; instead, they let the dough take its time through a three-step fermentation process lasting up to 36 hours. This dedication to time and care is what gives their muffins their signature flavor and texture.
Under Montana’s cottage bakery law, Furrow & Fly started small, selling their handcrafted English muffins at farmers' markets. The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, and soon, Furrow & Fly became a staple in local stores, including the Bozeman Community Food Co-op. Today, their muffins are not only available for purchase in-store but also featured in breakfast sandwiches at the Co-op’s Crossroad Café.
“The Co-op has been an incredible partner,” Charly shared. “They’ve helped us grow in ways I never imagined possible. Their support proves that choosing local creates something meaningful for Bozeman by reinvesting in our community.”
Sustainability is at the heart of Furrow & Fly. From sourcing 100% Montana-grown grains to using 100% compostable packaging, every decision reflects their commitment to the environment and local food systems. Beyond sustainability, Furrow & Fly is deeply invested in Bozeman itself. Charly’s vision for the business includes creating more jobs, collaborating with more local farms, and continuing to build a vibrant, interconnected community.
“What makes this journey so special is the people we get to work with,” Charly said. “It’s inspiring to collaborate with local farmers and see the community embrace our vision. Bozeman has supported us every step of the way, and we’re proud to give back by sourcing locally and reinvesting in the place we call home."
Furrow & Fly is more than just a bakery; it’s a testament to the power of community and the beauty of creating something with intention. Whether you pick up a pack of their muffins at the Co-op or enjoy a breakfast sandwich at the Crossroad Café, you’re supporting a local business that’s rooted in Bozeman’s history and dedicated to its future.
