The FDA has reclassified coconut, and it is no longer considered a tree nut allergen. As a result, coconut will no longer be listed in the allergen statement on products, including Co-op products, though it will still appear in ingredient lists.
We remain committed to transparency and food safety. If you have any concerns or dietary restrictions, please review ingredient lists carefully or ask a staff member for assistance.
This reclassification means that coconut will no longer be included in the "Contains" allergen statements on our ingredient labels. However, coconut and coconut-derived ingredients will still be clearly listed in the ingredient lists of our products, ensuring transparency for customers with dietary concerns.
The Co-op will make this change to our food labels within the next 2 – 4 weeks. However, the brands we carry will all have their own timelines for when they will change their product labels.
Since many food products have a longer shelf life, you may still see "Contains: tree nuts (coconut)" on some packaged items for a while. However, new labels will begin phasing out this classification over time.
We understand that food allergies and dietary needs are a top priority for many of our shoppers. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to carefully review ingredient lists and reach out to a Co-op staff member for assistance.
