Leading Community Partner: Gallatin Valley Farm to School
April 19, 2016
Last year, students at Monforton Elementary School chowed down on more than 100 pounds of local carrots. The reception? Overwhelmingly positive!
As one fourth grader put it, "I wouldn't ever say this about any ordinary carrot, but I love these carrots! Can I have seconds?"
Gallatin Valley Farm To School is leading efforts in our area to serve more locally-grown produce and meat in school cafeterias. The group supports food service staff to purchase local food, develop recipes and offer taste tests.
Last year, more than 1,150 students cooked with, and tasted, Montana-grown foods, including kale, beets, squash, lentils and beef.
In addition, Gallatin Valley Farm to School helps kids discover where their food comes from with lessons in school gardens, farm field trips and garden based summer camps.
In total, the program reaches more than 3,500 students annually with hopes of increasing that number every year.
Our Co-op is proud to support Farm to School as one of our Leading Community Partners through our Deep Roots program. We are inspired by their work to make healthy, local food more accessible to area students. In addition, their support of local farmers helps strengthen our local economy and preserve open spaces. These efforts are helping to make our community a better place.
