You may have noticed that we have a lot of compostable containers. From our hot bar to our grab-and-go containers, when you come to the Co-op, you can know that your trash isn't going to waste. And that's all thanks to our friends at Happy Trash Can Compost!
Started by Ryan Green & Adrienne Huckabone, this fantastic duo has been composting 30.000 pounds of food waste a week, which, in 8 weeks of curing, is ready to be used by local farms! This contributes to their mission of lowering greenhouse gases in the food system, which they do by closing the loop. Closing the loop refers to a fully sustainable food system where you buy locally from a farm; the food scraps are composted, and then that compost is used to grow food at the local farm, which reaches full sustainability.
An example of them closing the loop can be seen here at your Co-op with local Chance Farm! You recognize Chance Farm from the variety of produce that we sell at the co-op, but did you know that all of their produce is grown with composted scraps that Happy Trashcan got from the Co-op? For the past 8 years we have worked with Happy Trash Can Compost to close the loop in our community's food system. That means, with every scrap or compostable container you put in our compost bins, know that you are actively contributing to your local produce! So next time you purchase local produce from the Co-op, know that your trash is your local farmer's treasure.
