Blood Orange Shredded Pork Carnitas

This flavorful recipe, created by Ethan Yourd, our Meat & Seafood Manager, features slow-cooked pork shoulder infused with the tangy sweetness of blood oranges. Ingredients:

  • 1 large pork shoulder or pork tenderloin (boneless)
  • 1 white onion, diced
  • 3 blood oranges, juiced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the crockpot:
    • Dice the white onion and place it in the bottom of the crockpot.
    • Add 1 cup of chicken broth over the onions to create a flavorful base.
  1. Season the pork:
    • In a small bowl, mix the salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
    • Rub the seasoning mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it's well coated.
  1. Cook the pork:
    • Place the seasoned pork shoulder into the crockpot on top of the onion and chicken broth.
    • Juice the blood oranges and pour the juice over the pork and seasonings.
    • Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or until the pork is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  1. Serve:
    • Once the pork is done, shred it with a fork and mix it with the juices in the crockpot for extra flavor.
    • Serve the shredded pork in small tortillas to make carnitas tacos. Top with cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, crema, and any of your favorite taco toppings.
