Keeping Winter Fresh and Healthy

It may be winter, but the Co-op produce department is stocked with great fruits and veggies throughout the year.

What’s in season now? We recommend escarole, mizuna, Murcott tangerines, radicchio and bosc pears.

Escarole

Escarole is a variety of endive. Like radicchio, kale and chard, escarole is a hearty green that is available late into the growing season. High in folic acid, fiber, vitamins A and K, escarole can be eaten raw or cooked. Try tossing a few escarole leaves into a green salad or chop and stir into soup. $3.29/each

Mizuna

This is a slightly bitter tasting green, low in calories and packed with Vitamin A and folic acids, that can be grown year-round. Mix in fresh with a green salad or chop and add to pastas, soup or stir fries. Available in Bulk for $10.99/lb

Murcott tangerines

Also known as a “honey tangerine” this is a healthy and refreshing snack and great fruit option for the winter. An excellent source of Vitamin C and diettary fiber, they are easy to peel and the perfect lunch or snack option for kids. $3.39/lb

Radicchio

Rich maroon in color with white veins, this is a leafy chicory with a bitter and spicy taste, which mellows when it is grilled or roasted. Try mixed with risotto or grill in olive oil and season with salt, pepper and fresh parmesean. Low in saturated fat and cholesterol, it is a good source of many nutrients, especially dietary fiber and Vitamin C. $4.99/lb

Bosc pears

With a long tapering neck and cinnamon colored skin, bosc pears are slightly spicy and have a bit firmer flesh than other pears. They are low in fat, sodium-free, cholesterol-free and a great source of fiber and vitamin C. Eat fresh or peel and slice over a green salad with walnuts and Gouda cheese. $2.49/lb
