The devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince in Haiti has caused catastrophic destruction in one of the hemisphere’s poorest countries, with a death toll expected in the tens of thousands.

The quake struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince, the most densely populated part of Haiti, and hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless and countless dead remain buried. The United Nations estimates that “10 percent of the buildings in the city have been destroyed, leaving 300,000 people homeless, and many are fleeing the destruction.”
