A year or two ago I was introduced to the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund available through the Weston A. Price Foundation. The non-profit organization is in place as a resource for producers and consumers with a mission to defend the right to buy and protect the right to sell nutritious food directly from the farm. Benefits of the membership include expert legal representation, advice, resources and more.
Did I sign up for it? I thought about it, but didn’t. $125 is a lot of money to most of us small producers, but consider what a lawyer might cost you if something goes awry on your farm or growing operation. This is available to the consumer as well for $50 a year. I highly suggest your customers join too.
Little by little our rights are being stripped and taken away by imposing more regulations, license fees, etc. for selling things as simple as an Iris rhizome. (Another soap box item I blogged about.)
If you raise, grow or sell any of the following, you should belong to this fund: dairy, pork, fruits, baked goods, lacto-fermented foods and beverages, beef, lamb, herbs, sweeteners, poultry, row crops, vegetables and eggs.
This is nothing like pre-paid legal, if you’re at all familiar with that. It is a relatively new part of the Weston A. Price Foundation, but has proven to be a much-needed and used aspect. If you have any questions at all, a lawyer is available to you 24 hours a day.
Check it out today. I hope you join. I’m going to right now!
