Teenagers and Healthy Eating

If we are to really change our food production and health in this country, we have to change the eating habits of every demographic. And, teenagers may be among the more difficult when it comes to altering appetites.

An article recently in the New York Times notes that despite—or maybe because of—the fact that the number of American teenagers has tripled in the last two decades, eating habits have gotten worse.

“It seems the more we learn and talk about the importance of eating healthfully, the worse our eating habits and their consequences become. This is especially true among adolescents, who hold the nation’s progress and future health care costs in their fast-food-laden hands.”

One solution for changing this trend is put forth by the award-winning chef Rozanne Gold in collaboration with a nutritionist, Helen Kimmel. Their book “Eat Fresh Food: Awesome Recipes for Teen Chefs,” (Bloomsbury), is spotlighted in this article, and both raise questions about engaging young people directly. For, lifetime eating patterns are established in these years, and rarely change after.
